Chapter History

The Gamma Omicron Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was charted on Sept. 29, 1962 in Jacksonville, Florida. The chapter was charted under the leadership of Southeast Region Syntaktes Evelyn Hood of Atlanta, Georgia.

Since its charter, members of Gamma Omicron Sigma have remained committed to serving the Jacksonville community through the Sorority’s five national programs of service: Operation BigBookBag, Women’s Wellness Initiative, Project Cradle Care, Swim 1922, and our Youth Symposium. The chapter is also proud to award annual scholarships to deserving high school seniors and college students in the area.

Gamma Omicron Sigma sponsors two undergraduate chapters in Jacksonville. On April 10, 1971, twenty-eight young ladies chartered the Delta Upsilon Chapter at Edward Waters College. On March 11, 2009, five young ladies chartered the Rho Phi Chapter at the University of North Florida. Additionally, Gamma Omicron Sigma served as the initial sponsoring graduate chapter for the Lambda Rho Chapter at the University of Florida in Gainesville for nine years, which was chartered by eight young ladies on April 21, 1990.
